Burt Awards Announced

The Burt Award for African Literature competition, sponsored by CODE and the Ghana Book Trust, was announced in the Daily Graphic September 23, 2009. It was opened to Ghanaians only. The competition sought to produce engaging and educational stories for the youth (12-15 years old). 

Yesterday, the winners of the awards were announced at the Ghana Book Trust office located in Accra. They are:
  1. The Twelfth Heart by Elizabeth-Irene Baitie
  2. The Deliverer by Kwabena Ankomah Kwakye
  3. The Mystery of the Haunted House by Ruby Goka
The first prize, which is the gold prize, is worth GHC 16,000; the second prize, silver prize, worth GHC 8,000; and the third prize, bronze prize, is worth GHC 4,000. Winners will get their prizes in November at a book fair that would be organised by the Ghana Book Trust.

About the Winners
Elizabeth-Irene Baitie won the Junior Award in the 2005/2006 Macmillan Writers' Prize for Africa for "A Saint with Brown Sandals", July 2006. She was also shortlisted for the Senior Award in 2004 with "Lea's Christmas".

Ruby Goka is a medical practitioner.

Pre-colonial African Literature concerned itself with the fight for independence. Writings that were churned out during this period (before the 1960s) addressed colonialism and occupation and its tone was vitriolic.
